Armorial Hall Chairs

A pair of 19th century mahogany shield back hall chairs bearing the arms of D'Aeth of Knowlton Court, Kent. The family originally from Aeth in Flanders, but settled in Kent from the 16th century, becoming London merchants. A baronetcy was created in 1716 for Sir Thomas D'Aeth, member of parliament for Canterbury and later Sandwich. The chairs were made for his grandson, Sir Narborough D'Aeth, 3rd baronet of Knowlton, who succeeded his father in 1773. The baronetcy became extinct on his death.
