France 1850

Heavy 19th century bronze statuette highlighted in gilt bronze of Phrynè, the ancient Greek courtesan (b.371 BC) by famous French sculptor James Pradier (1790-1852)

Pradier is known for his neoclassical sculptures, charged with an eroticism that their mythological themes can barely disguise.

Important works by Pradier include the bust of the duc d’Olrèans in the Louvre. The Figures Of Fame in the spandrels of the Arc de Triomphe, decorative figures at the Madeleine Church and the Victories surrounding Napoleons tomb.
