John Bucknell Russell was a Scottish painter known for his fish and wildlife paintings, wooden carvings and lithographs.

He had painting contracts in many places in Scotland including Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Buckie and the Speyside village of Fochabers.

Russell received a commission from the Duke of Richmond and Gordon to carve and paint fish caught in the river Spey near Fochabers.  

The Dukes of Gordon's principal seat at the time of Russell's work was at Gordon Castle, Fochabers, Morayshire.
